This is honestly a thing I’ve wanted to fix for a while because I’ve been there, it certainly becomes a pain w/o some tools. But since working in AE is just a hobby of mine I’ve had fun trying to recreate those tools myself and freely given them back, cus hey, competition is good

I agree, but referring to my last point, should those not be paid-for because of that? It’s a hard question. Devs are almost always underpaid.
Personally I feel it doesn’t *all* fall on Adobe, they’ve given building blocks to fill in the gaps, but then the tools are made paid-for(original)

Apologies for being a bit long winded, I don’t really have a strong side on the issue since I can understand it being a tough matter, just wanted to dump my thoughts out there I suppose. I do 100% agree something like @cavalry__app is needed though. Competition is good!

I don’t think devs shouldn’t get paid for their work, but if the problem is artists not having the ability to do their work because *so many* tools are locked behind an unaffordable paywall for them, then that is the primary issue imo.

This might simply be a side affect of two of those apps being free (GIMP, Blender), but it certainly sets a strong precedent.

GIMP, Blender, even Maya. And sure, some of it is paid, but for these apps if it’s something that should’ve been there in the first place it’s most likely free, and maybe even open source.

What I do find interesting in contrast though is majority of other software with the ability to extend it doesn’t suffer from this issue,

But on the other hand, to make up for the lack of “native” features there’s *so many* of these paid scripts/plugins that it does get pretty absurd.

This is just my take: What the AE devs are doing is good, from what I see they’re improving the backend of the app, something script/plugin devs don’t have the access to do.

I know I’m late but I found this convo interesting so just chiming in. Based on your statement, is the overall consensus users don’t want to pay for scripts/plugins adding features that should be native/easy to do AE?

Yep, except this is really only possible because it’s pushing the position data into a global variable that’s being evaluated each time AE refreshes the preview
