…you duplicate the beginning of the layer for each frame, lol. Here’s an example project of what I mean. Addendum: there’s a slight catch to this in that because the time displacement effect is really just delaying the time of the layer, there’s no straightforward way to get the halftone to remain static AND still have the gradient animated, unless…

AE tip: If you want to preview at a different playback speed quickly (such as half speed), you can set a custom framerate in the preview panel, and then use the spacebar shortcut (custom framerate) OR shift+spacebar shortcut (current comp framerate).
