This may be a super long thread about some silly fun hobby I happen to love but I had to do a brain dump on this realization of what I think separates the good from the great in this genre. If anyone has some thoughts I’d love to hear them!

Also, not saying this applies across the board, some of this may certainly apply more or less to other types of videos. YTPMV/音MAD seems to me very centralized on the harmony between audio and video, frankly more than other videos because that’s almost soley what it relies on.
(original)

Side note, I’m certainly not an expert making YTPMV audio by any stretch, I mostly only work on visuals, but visual work comes after audio creation, so this is simply what I’ve picked up on that makes exisiting, good audio match up with some equally good, interesting visuals.

tl;dr: 1) Don’t use “cool effects” unless there’s a purpose and they can seamlessly be applied and fit to the audio. 2) Nail down key parts of the audio, and match that up with the visuals, keeping a fair screentime between every piece. Composition is especially vital.

Trying to include everything in a short video is like cramming an entire book into it, you’re dealing with a medium where a picture is already worth 1000 words, it needs to be summarized.

Basically the audible enjoyability isn’t a 1:1 with visuals. Visuals are for illustrating main ideas of the audio and keeping it visually coherent.

Example of good practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCKyfK45jU8
Amazing execution of visuals that match with the audio. There’s a lot more in the audio than shown in the video, but it’s a matter of focus, and it works super well here.(original)

Needless to say, the visuals onscreen also don’t match any of the audio samples, lol. A few other parts in the video could certainly be more matched up as well.

Example of bad practice: https://youtu.be/-o28LqAnaL8?t=39
This was simply bad on my end, this really could have had much more to do with the actual audio, but instead I lost focus on the audio and reverted to showing something onscreen for a much too long period of time.(original)

And overall just see if the flow feels good and makes sense. When I think something is complete I try to come back to it after a day or two, one of the best ways to show me where I could make better choices. Asking a friend what they think goes without saying.

If there’s multiple key parts of audio playing, determine which is more important for that segment. Don’t try to battle it by showing both, it’s just gonna be more confusing. This heavily calls back to composition too, laying out where and what is located onscreen is key.

Regarding those key parts of audio, balance them out. Showing 30 seconds straight of the lead sample isn’t going to be interesting after a while.

I personally think in most situations, parts of audio like bass and chords aren’t where visuals should lie, the lead, percussion, and any dialogue tends to be the heart of it. This is all subjective to sample choices and the song of course.

Second point, focus on key bits of audio. This is a huge key to what makes YTPMV great, if there’s a lack of focus on what makes the audio great, then the video just doesn’t fit and feels kinda off, and in turn makes the audio less memorable.

Example of good practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWwoSUKNbVM
Bit difficult to pick out a video that is “copying” a technique since the whole purpose is to transform it, but I think LENNOZ may be a solid example of this. Great use of basic motion that fits with the punchi-ness of the audio.(original)

Example of bad practice: https://youtu.be/1lksVYw3jAs?t=32
More of a nitpicky complaint, those generic “copied” circle bursts here aren’t adding anything, there’s much more possibilites to be fleshed out w/ the audio.(original)

RGB split has previously mentioned purpose, and it isn’t obtrusive with anything either. Also the visuals overall here I think aren’t going for that “cool” or “epic” feels, it’s puts much more (good) focus on the art.(original)

Example of bad practice: https://youtu.be/Y151DzyXiuY?t=8
One of my most earliest videos, susceptive to the ol’ RGB split for no apparent reason. Better for high impact hits, not a scrolling BG. Lots more could’ve been done for it to be more interesting.(original)

Copying a style is similar, it’s taking something that was previously for something else. It needs to be transformed in a way to fit your audio. A more common example of this is stock footage, it can’t just be thrown in, it needs to be modified to be presentable for the scenario.
(original)

Replying to @stysmmaker
Think about it, it’s like taking something out of context, it isn’t going to make sense unless there *is* context for it. If cool effects is what you’re trying to go for then it needs to have some sort of underlying factor to fit with the audio.
(original)
-
Replying to @stysmmaker
Addressing the first point, cool effects, or simply copying a style seen in another video, is NOT going to look good unless you can manage to apply that to the audio that’s being worked with.

So two themes I’ve tended to notice in YTPMV a lot recently are overusage of “cool effects,” and a lack of focus on key portions of audio. I’ve noticed these flaws in my own videos so I’m going to use them as examples. Will show good examples of what I mean with other’s.
